FFFX after all....?
Jan. 15th, 2026 02:47 pmI didn't sign up for the Five Figure Fanwork Exchange this year... but one of the pinch hits that's up for grabs was itching my brain. So I just put my name in for it, even though I'm not signed up for the exchange overall.
If they give it to me, I'll have about 4 weeks to write a 10k+ work, in addition to what I need to produce for the Rare Femslash Exchange.
Fingers crossed!!! ๐

irrationalgame!
Have you ever heard of the new-ish trope, the "Soulmate Goose of Enforcement"? The trope is that suddenly and for no apparent reason, a large and cantankerous goose appears in the story and herds the character towards their soulmate, refusing to rest or be dissuaded in any way until the two soulmates meet. It's a much more hands-on approach towards getting a couple together than people having text or symbols appear on their skin or dying of hanahaki disease.
As soon as I heard of this silly trope, I knew I had to write it for the Gingerpilot ship... and now I have! I'm proud to say that this fic is the FIRST "Soulmate Goose of Enforcement" Gingerpilot fic EVER!!! yes, yes, I know... I'll try not to let the fame go to my head.
This fic made me giggle so much while writing it, and it made my gift recipient laugh a lot too, or so she says -- and I have no reason to doubt her! Overall, this silly, silly fic has spread cheer and joy to at least ten people so far. I'm still very amused by it now, weeks later.
Hooray for Soulmate Geese!

My two gifts!
Jan. 10th, 2026 08:59 amAlthough it was a couple of days delayed, my gift in the "A Ship Awakens Holiday Exchange" just appeared recently! So I'll take the opportunity to talk about both of the Gingerpilot fanfic gifts I received for the holidays.
The fic I received for the Holiday Huxchange, organized for members of the "Aw Shucks, Hux" Discord server, is a beautiful six-chapter, 26K word exploration of early poly between Poe, Hux, and Lieutenant Mitaka of the First Order. I absolutely adore it, and the writer, Taz_Eichel. She has such a sensitivity when it comes to describing the inner landscapes of the characters, especially the difficult or remote ones, like Hux. I felt that all three points of view were absolutely spot-on. I could see everything in my mind's eye; her descriptions are lush and colorful, while also meditative, showing me insights into the different people's characters and why they do what they do.
One thing I really enjoyed, and found both relatable and intensely touching, was the understated but clearly intense D/s relationship between Mitaka and Hux. I think Taz is excellent at showing how the sub really needs their Dom to be there for them and ensure they're psychologically safe. The obvious bond between Mitaka and Hux was so sweet and heartbreaking to witness. And then they're bringing in Poe for a little bit of fun -- but of course, Plot and Feelings interfere. Or do they!??!?!
The look on my face when I realized I was going to get both plot AND a hot threesome scene....!!! :-D
I could reread this fic again and again, and I plan to! So far I've only commented on four of the six chapters, but I try to do it justice whenever I have the time and energy for another comment. Her fic is one of the best fics I've ever received as a gift.
The second fic I've received isn't finished yet, so I can't judge it! I've bookmarked and subscribed and commented and kudosed, and I hope the author has the time and energy to return to it, because Chapter 1 was quite promising.
It's no exaggeration to say that the holiday fanfics I received were among the highlights of my Christmas season. It's truly a gift to receive lovingly hand-crafted Star Wars porn, written to my exact tastes!
I am thrilled and lucky to be in this hobby and to have found such like-minded people!

My fic was revealed, and some of my favorite commenters have kudosed and commented on it -- including the person I wrote it for -- so I will call it a win!
Unfortunately, no one gave me anything in this exchange. :'( I'm a little bit sad about it, but sometimes, things happen -- people get sick or injured, or lose their jobs, or go through rough patches with their spouses or families, or suffer from accidents, natural disasters, acts of God... or sometimes, people just get hella writer's block and can't put out a fic in the timeframe specified. I'm hoping that my writer isn't horribly injured, in prison, or suffering in any way, and that they just -- forgot. That would be the ideal outcome!
In the meantime, I'm going to read all the other 6 fics in this exchange and pretend that they were alllllll written for me. Since they're all Gingerpilot, that won't be too hard for me to do! :)

Most of the way done
Dec. 31st, 2025 09:38 pmI'm at about 3700 words for my entry for the A Ship Awakens Holiday Exchange, and I should be able to finish it off and post it either tonight (I'm writing from a New Year's Eve party) or tomorrow at the latest.
Yay!
Meanwhile, I got my assignment for the 2026 Rare Femslash Exchange! It's going to be a challenge for me to fulfill this request, but I think that after a canon review in January, I should be able to come up with something. It's a pairing that, to be honest, I had never thought about before seeing the ship in the exchange tagset, but now that I've seen it, I am sold on it. This is similar to how I felt last year about Haruna Sakuro/Karin from Naruto!

2026 fast approaches
Dec. 28th, 2025 12:56 amOnly a few days left until 2025 will be behind me. I'll do a stats wrap-up early in the next year, and I'm not too concerned about stats like word count and kudos -- it's all a bit silly, really.
I'm looking ahead to the next few challenges ahead of me. I signed up for the Rare Femslash Exchange, which I did last year. Back then, I wrote Haruno Sakura/Karin from Naruto, and I really like that story; I still get kudos on it regularly, and comments every so often, because Naruto the fandom is huge, so there are just a lot of people circulating through it looking for stories. I really wonder what I'll match on this time!
I'll have that. Also, I'll have the fic exchange for the A Ship Awakens Discord server. It's due January 7, but I'll have to get it done by the 1st at the latest since I'll be out of town from the 2nd to the 6th.
Beyond that -- just WIPs. I need and want to finish my WIPs!

Huxchange done!
Dec. 20th, 2025 05:08 pmI missed the 2 PM deadline, but over the past 24 hours (less, actually), I wrote over 15K words to finish out my offering for the "Aw Shucks, Hux" Holiday Huxchange!
I warned the exchange mod that I was going to miss the deadline but get it completed today, and she said that was perfectly fine. Apparently I'm not the only one who had to miss the deadline. I'm in good company!
I'm pleased overall. It needs a bit more in a couple of places, and in a few days after I've recharged I might go back and fix those places up.
But the story as I meant to tell it now exists in the world, largely complete. It could absolutely stand on its own as-is, right now, and that's lovely and wonderful.
I'm done!
Now to eat and try to nap before heading out to see the Zoo Lights with family and friends tonight!
I feel a vast sense of contentment and accomplishment. I just hope my gift recipient likes it!

Sticking with the plan
Dec. 19th, 2025 07:38 pmI decided to stick with my original story plan for the Holiday Huxchange. Currently 17k deep, and I think I'll be able to finish before 2 pm tomorrow -- but it's gonna be tough. I didn't spend nearly enough time on this over the last week, perhaps because the deadline was moved, so I felt like I had all sorts of extra time ... But I didn't. And now, that time is almost up.
Hux-change ponderings
Dec. 18th, 2025 08:47 pmOkay, so I have a good four chapters of a story for the Holiday Huxchange all written... but the story I have in mind will need another three or so. Maybe more. And it's already Thursday... and I *do* need to sleep between now and the due date!
So I was thinking of deleting what I've already posted, to post later, outside of a challenge. Knowing me, it could be the seed of another 100K story, haha. And I was thinking of replacing it with something else -- something much shorter. I got up early this morning and wrote 1200 words of that.
But now, as I think of that new story, I'm building it out so it's just as long as the first one!
I'm honestly torn. Do I need to just write "a scene" with nothing around it? The minimum word count is only 2K, so if I just wrote "a scene" and nothing else, that would be fine...
... but what do I *want* to do?
I need to figure this whole thing out pretty quickly. Eeek!

Posted Yuletide offering
Dec. 16th, 2025 09:49 pmI just finished and posted my story for Yuletide this year! It's relatively short, but I really like it. I hope my recipient does as well!
Just two exchanges left now: Holiday Huxchange, due this Saturday, and the A Ship Awakens Holiday Exchange, now due January 7. I haven't even started this one because I figured I'd have plenty of time after the other two exchanges were turned in, and now I have even more time! January 7 feels like forever away.

A second extended deadline
Dec. 14th, 2025 03:22 pmThe "other" Hux-related server I'm on, "A Ship Awakens," also arranged for a holiday fiction exchange, with the original deadline of Christmas Eve.
Well, the organizer recently posted that she's pushing the deadline back. The new date is January 7.
So my new priorities:
* Yuletide (due this Wednesday, December 17)
* Aw Shucks Hux Holiday Exchange (due on Saturday, December 20, at 10 PM Global Standard Time, which is 2 PM on the West Coast of the US, where I am)
* A Ship Awakens Holiday Exchange, due January 7
This is considerably more relaxed than I had been counting on. Yay!... although also, having these deadlines relaxed has meant that I've done nothing but slack off and deal with real life stuff for the past few days.

Weekend efforts
Dec. 7th, 2025 06:24 pmOver the weekend, I wrote and then scrapped an entire scene for my Holiday Hux-change story, redid the rest of the outline with some new ideas, and then wrote another 1,900 words to make up for cutting that one scene.
I'm still behind my desired pace for this story, but I think now that I've changed the outline, I should be okay... if I'm diligent about my time for the next week. I'm resolutely REFUSING to increase the chapter count!
That's due on Monday, December 15th, at noon my time, but since I'll be at work, it's actually due Sunday night the 14th.
And then, Yuletide is due on Wednesday the 17th! So far I only have one scene and the lyrics to one song, but I should definitely put in another song, or perhaps even two, and firm up / write the rest of the plot!

Unequal chapter length
Dec. 5th, 2025 10:36 pmI just finished Chapter 2 of the work I'm preparing for the Holiday Hux-change, and I'm a bit irked to find that the two chapters have wildly different lengths. I considered taking a scene from one and adding it to the other, but it turns out the only real place to break it would have made the mismatch even worse, the other way! So I'm leaving them as they are.
I like writing chapters that are roughly the same length, and so far, this fic doesn't qualify. Curses! I will just have to target any remaining chapters in between the lengths of these two so they don't stand out as much.
Orrrrr I could find a scene to add in the shorter one, to even them out...

Weekend progress
Dec. 1st, 2025 10:41 amOver the weekend, I wrote a chapter and a half of my planned fic for the "Aw Shucks, Hux" Discord server's "Holiday Hux-change" event! It's due on December 15 at noon my time, but since that's a Monday, that means that for me, it's really due Sunday night the 14th. Eeek, that's in just two weeks!
I have about 6.5K words so far. Three more scenes will finish out Chapter 2. I have five chapters planned overall -- although originally that was four, and midway through Chapter 1, I realized that what I wrote so far needed to be split into two. That... may end up happening again.
I'm really excited about this fic! I wish I had more time to work on it, but I won't have a moment to myself for quite awhile. In the meantime, I'll spend my time fantasizing about how the story will go, so when I finally get some leisure time, I'll be able to just spew it out through my fingertips!

Idea for Holiday Huxchange fic
Nov. 10th, 2025 08:58 pmThe Aw Shucks Hux Discord server is doing a holiday fic exchange, and I signed up! The due date is noon on Monday December 15, which means for me that it's due Sunday night the 14th. That's in about a month, and it's my next deadline.
I just sat down, worked up some ideas for plots, chose the strongest one, and jotted down several thousand words of notes on how the plot could go. I feel pretty good about this one!
I'll be busy for the next little while supporting a family member who is having major surgery, so I won't have much time to start writing it for a little bit. But when I do, the plot will already be here waiting for me to flesh it out. ๐

My contributions to Rare Pair Exchange!
Nov. 2nd, 2025 09:45 pmAuthors for the Rare Pair Exchange have been revealed, so I can finally talk about the two pieces I contributed!
The first, my actual assignment, was for the 1958 movie "The Big Country." I offered this on a lark, because I remember enjoying the movie when I saw it over a decade ago, and because my husband and I still refer to it sometimes. When I actually matched on it, I had to watch the movie again -- of course -- and then I spent a few days coming up with this! I really like this one.
I've never before written a fic in the traditional "5 + 1 format." It seemed like a natural fit after rewatching the movie and reveling in the scene where Julie appalls Jim so thoroughly that the movie ends up censoring what she's telling him! He looked quite queasy about it, too.
My gift recipient commented twice to say how much they like this fic, which makes me really glad!
I also picked up a pinch hit for a recipient I've written for before, Jamez. I wrote them a fic in the fandom RWBY for the Exchanges After Dark Birthday Bash 2025, almost a year ago. They were appreciative back then, so I figured they'd be similarly enthusiastic with their comments now!
The ship is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (specifically Thunderbolts 2025), with her assistant, Mel. There's rampant speculation that Mel is going to turn out to be Mel Gold, aka Songbird, although so far she's "just" Valentina's assistant. Since Valentina is up to all manner of shady things, Mel also has to be up to her eyebrows in such doings.
The Rare Pair Exchange really made me wait! I finished these fics in September, and now it's November. Reveals were delayed again and again, probably because all of the requests were so damn rare. I mean -- that's what we get for participating in a RARE pair exchange, right??
I'm happy that these are finally out there, and finally under my own name. They are quite rare and no one is searching for them; along with my other recent "weird" fics, and the cessation of my previous ongoing longfic, I'm not getting a ton of kudos recently. But that's okay! Life isn't about kudos. Kudos are fun, but some of the best things I've written get practically zero kudos; kudos quantity is not correlated with quality in any regard.
I'm gearing up to write more things, but unfortunately I was busy all weekend. Looking forward to evenings this week so I can try to crack into some of this burden of work that's hanging over my heart.
