Jan. 7th, 2003 09:33 pm317) Weird luck for me yesterday.
First, I was walking to my bus when I heard a coin drop. I spotted the coin and waited to see if one of the people walking along would stop to pick it up, but no one did; so I did.
It was a 20-cent coin from Singapore. How random was that, to just find one of those freshly dropped onto the Seattle sidewalk? Weird.
Then I went to the Safeway in the evening and checked out the meat section. There was a beef roast there that weighed over 5 pounds easily. (I just made one the other day so I know what 5 pounds feels like.) But it was marked at only 67 cents -- total!
I went to the checkout line and asked about it. The guy first joked and said "Oh, they must have dropped that on the floor!" (at least I think he was joking :-p ) (the checker and bagger were both young college guys and it was late at night, so they felt that they could joke safely.)
Then the checker saw what it really was: Someone had keyed in the weight as 0.68 pounds, and at 99 cents a pound (on sale), that totaled 67 cents.
So I bought it and brought it home, and it's in my freezer. The Singaporean coin is in my jacket pocket.
Weird luck.
