Dec. 23rd, 2024 08:32 pmI revised my Gingerpilot Christmas exchange fic outline once again, because this morning while driving, I thought of a juicy plot device that I could use to insert even more angst!
I also rethought my characterization of Hux in this fic. My first draft drew him as way too soft. In canon, Hux is the type who would cut off his own arm if it served his goals. I went through the draft tonight and toughened him up -- removed anything that could make him seem like a damsel in distress (!!) or anything that doesn't fit him as a calculating, goal-oriented badass. It's a modern AU, but we can't change people's personalities too much or else what's the point of writing fan fic? At that point, just choose new names for the people and call it good.
Writing this fic has given me the excuse to delve into a past part of my life, and bring that knowledge and expertise into the details of this piece. It's always so much fun to do that! I've definitely been having a great time with it.
Just two more chapters to go -- I have to write a high point, then a plot-driven low point, then personal growth and communication and reconciliation, and then a happy ending with lots of Christmas feels! :)
The deadline has been pushed out a bit, so I no longer have to get this done by Christmas itself -- which is one reason I let myself redo the chapter by chapter outline to make it longer. If I had to stick to the original deadline, I would have had to stick with the original outline. As it is, I'm at 17K words and I have another 10K to write, roughly.
