Hot vs dead fandoms
Sep. 7th, 2024 11:33 amThe first chapter of my Dead Boy Detectives fanfic has been up for roughly 36 hours. In that time it has already acquired 20 subscriptions, 4 bookmarks, and 32 kudos. To put it in perspective, it's now tied in kudos with a fic I published last December, which was for an exchange, so presumably it should have had at least a bit of a built-in audience.
The fic it's tied with is for an anime called "乙女ゲームの破滅フラグしかない悪役令嬢に転生してしまった… | My Next Life as a Villainess" -- it's a sweet and charming issekai anime in which our clueless reincarnated Earth heroine manages to get pretty much every important noble of her generation to fall in love with her. Meanwhile, she's completely oblivious to their feelings, and just thinks they're all such good friends!
It's not as though Dead Boy Detectives is a huge fandom, but it *is* hot right now, especially in the wake of the news of its cancellation by Netflix. So that's the reason just as many eyeballs have pointed its way in 36 hours as the other anime's fic had in over 8 months!
This isn't my hottest fic ever. That was clearly Bloodlines, which garnered 50+ kudos a day for the first few days of its existence, and is currently by far my most popular fic in terms of raw kudos, at 623.
(After that initial burst, the kudos kept coming regularly for a few months, and I had a little group of frequent commenters that I grew to care for. But then I ruined everything by putting in an explicit chapter with some kinks that I feel are fairly mild, but that must have driven away my group. Some of them never commented again. I really wanted to apologize to them, but on the other hand, I had been planning that dynamic for at least 10 chapters and I really wanted it in the story. So. A sad tale, but in the end, I wrote it the way I wanted it.)
(I will also note that Bloodlines gets very few kudos nowadays. I think everyone who was super into the Nimona fandom in summer 2023 has moved on to other things. It's definitely not a fic with a "long tail" in terms of engagement.)
Anyway! I'm not terribly bothered or elated by kudos, although of course I like *some* feedback to fuel my needy little writer's heart. What I truly value are comments. Comments are liquid gold in my veins. I need comments to live!!! (Not really... well... maybe not really)
In other news, I spent a few hours this morning on the 20th and final chapter of Spanks for the Memories. It's an action chapter, which I always find harder to write than feelings chapters, so it was slow going. I hope to spend more time on it this afternoon, and definitely will spend more tomorrow morning. I want to finish!
