An initiative I can get behind

The point: To put an initiative on the ballot that's so completely ridiculous -- and yet, a logical extension of anti-gay-marriage reasoning -- that it will end up becoming a legal challenge that will strengthen gay marriage in the end. It makes me happy to see bad reasoning carried through to its logical conclusion and then applied with perfect consistency.
Darn it! If the July 5 deadline for collecting signatures weren't so close -- only next week! -- I would totally print this out and ask my friends to sign it.
If only I'd known about this a few days ago, I would have had a copy here at the house yesterday, available for signing by the estimated 20 million friends who came over for Munchkin and then D&D.
Le sigh.
Initiative 957
If passed by Washington voters, the Defense of Marriage Initiative would:
- add the phrase, “who are capable of having children with one another” to the legal definition of marriage;
- require that couples married in Washington file proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage automatically annulled;
- require that couples married out of state file proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage classed as “unrecognized;”
- establish a process for filing proof of procreation; and
- make it a criminal act for people in an unrecognized marriage to receive marriage benefits.
