Just Unrequited works!

The authors in the Just Unrequited exchange have been revealed, so I can finally write about the two fics I contributed!
First off, my main assignment. I was willing to write for either the ship "Perrin Fertha for Mon Mothma/Tay Kolma," "Tay Kolma for Mon Mothma," or "Syril Karn for Dedra Meero." When it came right down to it, I felt that I'd already explored Syril for Dedra in the fic Heard But Not Seen, so I decided to write for Perrin for Mon/Tay.
I wrote the first two chapters all at once, as one thing, and was all ready to publish it that way...
... but then I thought, Wouldn't this be a bit better with a little bit more? So I broke up what I'd already written into two, and added a third chapter. I think it's good this way, although perhaps Chapters 1 and 2 are a bit more of their own "thing." I hope Chapter 3 doesn't feel like an add-on.
I took the title from the speech Perrin gives at Leida and Stekan Skuldun's wedding. From that speech, you can see that Perrin really doesn't have many convictions left in life -- perhaps he did, once, but not anymore. Now, all he can see to grasp at are fleeting moments of pleasure.
I feel sorry for Perrin, and I tried to show how if he'd made different decisions at any point, maybe he could have unlocked what Mon was really doing -- what she was really struggling with. He could have helped, if only he'd been less self-centered! But, as things were, he continued on in his pampered, elevated life, completely ignorant of the struggles and sacrifices his wife was making behind his back. In the end, he failed at being a good husband (and, I'd argue, also at being a good father -- I didn't see him trying to bring much harmony to the Mon / Leida conflict).
Perrin, to me, is a tragic figure, and I tried to show that (amidst all the smut, haha!).
The second fic I wrote was a pinch hit, and I wrote it entirely on my phone! That was manageable -- barely -- for a fic less than 4K words... but I certainly wouldn't want to write anything longer than that this way. Ugh. I didn't get carpal tunnel, but a few more weeks of that nonsense and I might have. Do not recommend!
I had been eyeing this pinch hit for a week before actually picking it up, waiting for the deadline to pass and a new deadline for pinch hits to be announced. Once that happened, I had 5 more days than I would have if I'd signed up before. So I pounced on it right away -- I think I claimed this pinch hit within an hour of it going live.
I'd packed a book on troubadour poetry to take on my trip, just in case I could pick up this pinch hit. So then I went through it and typed three poems into my phone -- ugh, including odd spacing choices, which was a pain because I needed to use & nbsp ; for each one -- and then wrote around those poems. At intervals, I'd save the whole thing into my Notes app, just in case I accidentally blanked it out on AO3. What a pain!
I thought this could have had a stronger ending, but all my ideas for that would have spun it out into several thousand more words, and I couldn't get that done in just a few days while on vacation and having no laptop.
Funnily enough, these two fics of mine were the two longest in the entire exchange, believe it or not! It makes me wonder whether "unrequited" fics are naturally shorter than others. Perhaps that's the case...??
All in all, a successful exchange! I've been enjoying reading many of the other contributions to the collection!
